Mis-en-scene planning
Lady G's Props:
High end fashion Bags: These are used for the majority of Lady G’s scenes in order to accentuate her wealth and her high profile character.
She also wears red lipstick to represent her beauty and femininity. This also has connotations of blood, danger and death, foreshadowing her murder. The audience will most likely pick up on this as the opening sequence starts with scenes of her murder.
Louis Vuitton Purse: This continues to portray this rich and wealthy image if Lady G, implying that she owns a lot of expensive clothes. It is also effective to exaggerate the contrast between what lady G is wearing and what Roy is wearing.
Phone: Lady G is shown answering an unknown number which emphasises the danger she is in and foreshadows her death because the audience later find out that the unknown number is Lady G’s murderer (Roy).
Setting:
In the first scene of my opening sequence, I plan to have an establishing shot of the Dubai skyline in order to give the audience an understanding of where the film is going to take place. I also plan to have Roy's scenes in the streets of the city in order to create a sense of ambiguity and eerie. I have also chosen to film at the mall. The mall is a good place to shoot Lady G's scenes as it highlights her wealth and her nature as well as it sets the mood and idea that she is innocent and vulnerable.
Lady G Costume:
Lady G wears expensive clothes, mainly because she is portrayed as a rich woman. She holds a Louis Vuitton bag and wears only designer clothes. Her face is always covered in make-up to emphasis the fact that she cares about her appearance and the way people look at her. She wears a lot of different dresses as dresses often suggest at a females femininity and it is stereotypical for a woman to wear a dress, let alone; an expensive one.
Roy's Props:
Roy carries a briefcase in one of the scenes. What is inside the briefcase is never revealed to the audience in the opening sequence, this therefore then acts as an enigma that intrigues the audience, hence its use.
Briefcase: The briefcase is used to emphasize the idea that Roy is in disguise in order to contrast his scruffy, cheap, rebellious character that he originally portrays. It could demonstrate his desperate character and suggests that he is trying to cover up his identity in order to hide something he has done. The use of the briefcase in the scene is also significant because it allows us as the producers to dominantly focus the camera on the “Full Stop.” tattoo on Roy’s wrist. The briefcase is small, black and made out of leather. It is stereotypical for a working middle aged man to hold a briefcase and it suggests that Roy strives to be life.
Phone: The phone is used to suggest that Roy is contacting someone. This continues to drop enigmatic features because the audience doesn't know who he is talking to or what he is talking about.
Roy's Costume:
Roy is seen very subtly in his scenes. He is shown to be wearing a black hoodie and black pants. The hoodie often highlights the fact that Roy is a teenage boy who suffers from a difficult life. Criminals are often portrayed in the media as dark and mysterious characters. They are often associated with the color black and tend to hide themselves and their identity through covering up.
Lady G's makeup:
Lady G is shown to wear a lot of make-up. One of the main aspects of her make-up is the red lipstick. I chose for her to have a strong bright shade of red lipstick in order to emphasis her sexuality and femininity as the red lipstick is known to be sexually attractive for the opposite sex. On the other hand, the color red can symbolize danger, blood and death which ultimately foreshadows her death and could suggest that she is in danger as she always has red lipstick on.
Roy on the other hand does not have any make-up on, instead his face is continuously covered by his hoodie and very little of his face shows in order to create a sense pf mystery and tension and is an effective way of implementing enigmatic features.
