RECORD INDUSTRY
MAJOR RECORD LABEL
The major record labels dominate the music scene. They're main three that dominate the music scene are Universal music group, sony music group and warner music group. They control about 88% of the market which is a very huge amount. These record labels makes it very appealing to artists due to high amount of funding which is available. It ensures that artists are backed fully and can reach their best potential in every aspect such as music videos or promotion. In addition to that they have connections all around the world due to their size. This means that they can connect artists worldwide which can allow artists to hit the next step in their career. For example, if an artists who is talented but not known globally does a song with a major artist such as Drake this can help them get onto the scene. However, the downside is that due to the size of the record label they might not be able to focus on each artists the same amount of time. This can lead to artists being frustrated as they might feel the record label hasn't given them enough attention and therefore start conflicts.
INDIE RECORD LABEL
Indie record labels are independent and have low amount of finances available to them. They tend to release music which are non-mainstream but allow artists to have more freedom such as what to do with their song. The main reason why an Indie label will sign someone is that they believe the person has potential. They have a very close relationship with the artists which can lead to artists having their concerns responded quickly. The downside of an Indie Label is funds. They lack funds and as a result the artists may not produce the best music video or promotion which can be damaging in their career.
