AJ's Star Identity
Ideology and Culture
'Stars' promote certain ideologies, cultural values and attitudes that they share with their audience and it is the audience's interest in these values that enhances the artist's 'Star Quality'. To fit into this, it is important that the Star conveys ideas and opinions on topics both within and outside the music industry to give them more lasting relevance. This is often seen in 'Star's' initiating fashion trends and raising awareness on important, hard hitting topics on their social media.
How we followed this with AJ.
AJ is an advocate of raising awareness on the importance of mental health and promotes the belief that people shouldn't be afraid to talk about their problems and receive help. This was constructed through his social media and AJ follows Young Minds on Twitter, a charity which helps children and young adults with mental health problems. AJ's show of support for this, makes him more culturally relevant to his audience.

Industry and Audience
The music industry and record labels are well aware that the way to make the most money is to create 'Stars' rather than 'pop performers'. To do this they try and create varied Stars with marketable features, however, they don't always get it right and this is where we see formulaic and repetitive artists. In addition to this, it is important for the record labels to continuously provide something/someone new and fresh for newer, younger audiences.
We created AJ's Star Identity to not meet the conventional personas of huge R&B artists, to ensure he stood out as unique and someone new and fresh to the audience. AJ is a goofy, awkward, slightly nerdy artist as opposed to the polished, suave and sophisticated identities of most R&B artists. Additionally, when looking into the R&B genre we noticed that it was doing well but the top selling songs weren't over saturated with the genre, suggesting a gap in the market.

Stars as Constructions
Even though 'Stars' are represented by 'real' people they are constructed, artificial images specifically designed to make money
Whilst the theory before is true, we wanted AJ to be as authentic as possible and so he is relatable to his audience and not seen as 'fake'. We kept him as close to an authentic person as possible and simply emphasised certain more marketable traits.
