Goodwin Music Video Conventions
Voyeurism
Alvvays have achieved voyeurism through the use of beauty shots of the main singer of the band.
We have done this in a similar way to Alvvays, by using beauty shots of Casey Tyler.
The notion of looking
Best Coast did that in their music video for
Crazy For You
by presenting the performance as if through a camera on the set of the music video filming.
We have used the notion of looking to change Casey Tyler's character from a performer to Alice in Wonderland as part of the narrative. We have shown her looking into a mirror to see that her clothes have changed.
Relationship between music and visuals
Jessie J does this in her music video for
Price Tag
through her use of mise en scene. For example, with the lyric "money money money", there is a money tree prop with dollar notes on it.
We have done this in many places to strengthen the lyrics for the audience and to tie the video to the music. For example, in the fight scene, there are graphics that have the actual lyrics on them to match with the song.
Inter textual references
Sia's
You've Changed
references video games in the format of the video.
We have done this by making reference to nostalgic elements of pop culture. For example, with Sgt Pepper, Alice in WOnderland, Mortal Kombat, and Singin in the Rain.
